A survey to measure prices of medicines and their availability using WHO – HAI methodology.

  • Consumer awareness needs to be increased in generic medicines, so that it creates the demand which will drive the retail pharmacies to stock low priced generics.
  • There should be ceiling on profit margins especially on essential and scheduled medicines. It can be defined percentage of manufacturing price. MRP should include the local tax as for any other consumer item and prices should not wary according to demand.
  • Greater consumer awareness is required for checking and paying the right price based on MRP.
  • The list of medicines under drug price control order should include the medicines on the National Essential Medicines list (EML) and their prices should be monitored on ongoing basis and methods should be transparent and published.
  • Medicines needs to be considered different from consumer products, to improve the affordability, taxes on EML medicines should be waived.
  • Medicines availability in the Govt. sector under the department of Medical Education and Drug and Ministry of Public Health needs improvement.
  • The essential drug list of government sectors should include the drugs recommended in the WHO as the core list of Drug needed for drug.
  • Generic Prescriptions needs to be encouraged so that retailers can also stock low priced generics.
  • Legislation is required to empower the pharmacists in generic substitution.
